Special Occasions

Special Occasions are one off performances and events hosted by Lucy Guerin Inc for the wider dance community and beyond. An external curator is invited to propose an idea which addresses some aspect of our contemporary dance culture which interests them. This event has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, it aims to bring together the diverse elements of the dance community in Melbourne including students, professionals, critics, administrators, designers and presenters to generate a discussion of the depth and breadth of our art form and to excite an awareness of the possibilities available to us. Secondly, it creates an opportunity for a young performer, dance-maker or other professional to develop a concept based on their perception of what is important in dance right now and present it as a performance event. This will require formulating an idea, going through the process of finding an appropriate format and responding to the organisational demands this will require.

Special Occasions do not include presentations of choreographed works. They are an opportunity to present an idea which sits outside of the usual dance formats. They are run on a tight budget and may take place at Lucy Guerin Inc studios or another location. They will be developed in close consultation with Lucy Guerin Inc staff.
