First Run is a bi-monthly platform, which aims to enliven discussion around contemporary dance. Artists working across the field of contemporary dance are invited to share explorations in their current practice. The intention is that the work shown is rough, raw and full of possibilities, which encourages audiences to engage in discussion and give feedback to the artists.
Each First Run a guest conversationalist will be invited to the session to help provoke a broader conversation about dance - referencing their own experiences in order to support the development of language, perspective and dialogue for the artists and the audience.
To present work at First Run contact Luke George and Brooke Stamp firstrun@LucyGuerinInc.com
Please see the website for updates closer to each event.

HOTBED WITH DD DORVILLIER
What a pleasure its been having DD Dorvillier and 15 Hotbed participants working in the studio these past two weeks! As a part of DD's Touch Move Talk Write: open studio practices + a re-enactment workshops, the group have been working on recreating scenes from Jean-Luc Godard's film Prénom Carmen (First Name Carmen). Our studio has been transformed into a film set inside and out!
More about the workshop:
Exploring what is meant by “practice”, by generating practices from what we already know about touching, moving, talking, or writing. We will make and practice these practices by inventing rules, applying different durations and contexts, and doing them in different sequences. Touch, movement, talking, and writing will all get equal time. We will push the notion of practice to extremes in order to discover something about self and unspoken rules. The aim is to proliferate unexpected results, to try many things quickly, and to foment revolution.
Hotbed comes to an end this Friday. For up to date information on future Hotbed programs please subscribe to our e-newsletter or like us on Facebook.
DD Dorvillier has been developing her artistic work in New York City since 1989, as well as performing in the works of others, teaching, curating, and mentoring. She is also an active force in the international dance scene. In 2003 she was awarded a Bessie for Choreography of Dressed for Floating, and in 2010 for her performance in Parades & Changes, replays, a re-activation by French choreographer Anne Collod, of Anna Halprin's seminal work. In 1991 she and dancer/choreographer Jennifer Monson created the Matzoh Factory. For over a decade the studio was an accessible grassroots site for wild experimentation where many choreographers and artists congregated for low-tech and low-cost shows, rehearsals, parties, and readings. She has worked with and been deeply influenced by: Jennifer Monson, Zeena Parkins, Jennifer Lacey, Yvonne Meier, Sarah Michelson, and Karen Finley, among others. She has been a Movement Research Artist in Residence twice, was curator of the Movement Research Festival twice, and co-editor of the double issue of the the MR Performance Journal “Release”. She received a New York Foundation for the Arts Choreography Fellowship (2000), a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Fellowship (2007), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2011). Her work with her company, human future dance corps, has been presented in New York at The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project, and PS 122, among others. Internationally she has presented her work at ImPulsTanz, Vienna; DeSingel, Antwerp, STUK, Leuven; Hau/Hebel am Ufer, Berlin; Frascati, Amsterdam; Zagreb Dance Weeks, Zagreb; Springdance Dialogues/TSEH Festival, Moscow; and many others. Her current project Danza Permanente, produced by human future dance corps, is co-produced internationally, and in New York by The Kitchen.

Studio Resident Antony Hamilton
Antony Hamilton is the current Resident in our Studio, rehearsing for the next three weeks in the lead up to the premiere of his newest work Black Project 1 at Arts House this March.Black Project 1 is part of a catalytic double bill with choreographer/performer Melanie Lane, in which the symbiotic elements of body, light, objects and sound occupy time and space to explode any perception of a static universe.
Hamilton’s Black Project 1 meditates on the synthesis between the gravity-bound body and its connection to the forces and minerals of the earth. Two beings relentlessly traverse a panoramic, linear terrain, leaving artefacts of human intervention in their wake as they go forth into solitude and emptiness.
Lane’s Tilted Fawn creates an intimate, intense, audio-sensitive universe where our urge to seek transformation through advanced technologies is brought into question. This is a world of sensory delight, in which an orchestra of lo-fi sonic objects propels a lone dancer through landscapes that are by turns luscious, melancholic, stark and utopian.
Dates: Wednesday 7 – Sunday 11 March

Home Art in the Sustainable Living Festival
In December 2011 across North Melbourne and West Melbourne an international art project ( A Climate Commission) was commissioned by TippingPoint Australia and the City of Melbourne - a collaboration between choreographer Lucy Guerin and three households who created new dance works performed by them in their own homes.By being local in its creation and presentation and with support from the City of Melbourne's sustainability team to measure and reduce the emissions of some of the participants houses and work places, the project models a new way of making low carbon art that offers a chance for neighbours to see each other in a new light.
Come along to the premier free screening of Home Art - a short documentary - at Federation Square Big Screen as part of the Sustainable Living Festival at 9pm on Saturday 18 February.

Touch Move Talk Write: open studio practices + a re-enactment
The workshop will be a triptych, one part structure, two parts content.1. We can use 2 and 3 as content.
2. Part of practicing will be a daily and evolving re-construction of the bank robbery scene from the film “Prenom Carmen” by Jean-Luc Godard.
3. Learning the generic phrases from Danza Permanente, bits and pieces of a Beethoven String Quartet, made visible in silence.
