Greenie-in-Residence | Bek Berger

In 2015 we decided to engage Bek Berger as our Greenie-in-Residence. Bek worked with us one day a week over six weeks to conduct an environmental audit to measure our emissions in 2014. She also provided advice, tips and inspiration for us moving forward as a leader in environmentally responsible art making. Small changes such as regulating heating and cooling, introducing a paper reduction strategy, installing energy saving bulbs, switching to walking meetings and greener catering options have already been implemented – but there is a long way to go.

We have plans afoot to introduce other ways of reducing our carbon footprint and inspire our community through green project, so please watch this space!

A history of Lucy Guerin Inc’s Environmental Policy

The impetus to investigate and improve Lucy Guerin Inc’s environmental performance was born from a sense of immediacy and responsibility to preserving our natural world, combined with a strong desire to be at the forefront of environmental best practice initiatives within the Australian performing arts community.

We acknowledge the Company is in the early stages of our environmental investigations and best practice implementations. We also believe, essential to a ‘robust’ policy is acknowledgement that working towards and implementing environmental best practice involves risk, experimentation and failure.

Our Statement of Intent for the Environment

Lucy Guerin Inc’s ‘environment’ in broad terms, is the external, predominantly natural world of our surroundings, both affecting and affected by, natural and human activity. Our sense of responsibility for the minimal and fair use of the resources of our environment, alongside the economic activity and social progress of the Company, underpins our notion of the sustainability approach, and the foundations of our Environmental Policy.

Lucy Guerin Inc recognises climate change as a most critical global concern. We honour a commitment to working towards a future for our world than can be more sustainable.

We give precedence to understanding the Company’s position in relation to our evolving world, in all local, national and global contexts. Crucial to this is acknowledging and taking responsibility for our share of environmental impact. This involves:

  • Development of a systematic method to improve our carbon footprint throughout operations.
  • Working towards this method becoming intrinsic to our every day practice.
  • Recognition that this process involves experimentation and failure.
  • Working collaboratively with our community, leading by example and inspiring others.

Our way of thinking about our environmental actions have been inspired and informed by our partnership with local green network, Greening our Performance Alliance.

Balancing Environmental Best Practice with Creative Freedom

Artistic Director Lucy Guerin’s creative vision is the first and foremost priority for Lucy Guerin Inc. The Lucy Guerin Inc Environmental Policy exists to provide a meaningful guide for the Company to engage with the considerations of improving our environmental impact and help us work to reduce our carbon footprint without compromising the creativity and artistic foresight of Lucy Guerin.

Scope of Policy

This policy applies to all Lucy Guerin Inc operations in the office and studio, touring productions, as well as, where possible all design components of future dance works.

Implementation

An Environmental Action Plan (EAP) supports Lucy Guerin Inc’s environmental statement of intent and scope of policy. The EAP is a strategic guide to assist the Company in reducing its environmental impact across the scope of carbon emissions and resource use. It sets guidelines for all key stakeholders of the Company and identifies a framework of key actions (short and long-term) the organisation is committed to.

Environmental Updates

Weather – North America Tour 2013

Lucy Guerin Inc have endeavoured to provide all presenting venues with a Green Rider detailing our environmental intentions and requesting data where possible for energy consumption of each performance season.

Company travel between presentation venues has been planned in consultation with each venue, requesting advise upon most environmentally friendly transfer options, taking into consideration time and financial constraints.

Weather – Set Design

Our Environmental Policy has been considered in the staging of Weather. Several components of the set have been re-purposed from disused theatrical materials. The set design also includes the use of plastic shopping bags. These bags create an important image relating to human impact on climate and the environment. Lucy Guerin Inc has considered, and takes seriously the effect of these plastic bags on the environment. We have developed a strategy to negate these impacts as best possible:

The plastic bags will be reused for all touring of the production. In addition 250 reusable shopping bags, made from a recycled plastic, will be distributed. Every single use of one of these bags prevents 2 plastic bags going to landfill, representing the potential to prevent almost four times the quantity of plastic bags used in the Weather set, from going as waste to landfill. The changes we are making

Late 2011 Lucy Guerin Inc undertook an environmental audit, resulting in a Carbon Footprint Report that provides a baseline for our operations and benchmark for improvements. The report identifies a framework of key actions (short and long-term) the organisation is committed to.

We are a lean team here, so we are managing our improvements with small steps.
